The Youth Accountability Board (YAB) works with first-time offenders under age 18 who have been arrested and charged with a non-violent crime or received a minor in possession citation (alcohol, marijuana).
We provide an ALTERNATIVE to the formal judicial system that can result in your child facing a fine, conviction, detention facility, formal probation, and/or a permanent criminal record.
Our Board Members are dedicated community volunteers who provide an 8-week diversion program to tweens and teens referred to us by the Bonner County Prosecutor's Office.
Our program helps young offenders avoid a formal record through community service, education, and reflection focused on positive change. We have been proudly serving our community for almost 40 years.
Our dedicated YAB citizen volunteers come from many diverse backgrounds, experiences, and communities across Bonner County.
We share a passion for empowering youth to make wiser choices, fostering personal accountability and providing personalized strategies to avoid repeat crimes. We witness firsthand the transformative impact on young lives with an extremely low re-offense rate.
We meet with youth and their legal guardians who have been recommended for our diversion program directly by the Prosecutor's Office in lieu of court.
Our YAB directors are available on Tuesdays at the Bonner County Courthouse in downtown Sandpoint after 3 p.m. for pretrial diversion.
Youth who choose our program then meet in-person and by appointment only on the 2nd or 4th Wednesdays of each month between 5:00-7:00 p.m. and leave with a formal, signed contract of assigned tasks including mandato
